As I continue to reduce my waste, I’m constantly amazed at how much waste there is in society. Of course, we all know that we waste, but you don’t realize just how much and how casual it is. Also, you begin to realize how much the environment (and, therefore, we) would benefit if society wasn’t so apathetic.
I hardly use disposable cups, plates, or whatever anymore, especially not at home, despite being raised using them for almost every meal. (I know, pretty crazy.)
But I’m changing, improving. We all can. It just takes a bit of effort.
P.s. Michael at climateadaptation thinks the figures on the mug are off. Personally, I have no way to know. Honestly, it doesn’t matter. Cutting down any trees for cups, plates, whatever, when there are simple alternatives (e.g. while at home or the office) is, frankly, really stupid. Just imagine trying to explain the practice to someone who’s never heard of paper cups while also acknowledging the huge problem we have with deforestation and climate change. I don’t think there’s a way to do it without our society sounding really shortsighted, lazy, and stupid.
